About Me

  • There are starting points both large and small for my articles and essays: my adopted home state of Alaska, travel, food, science, odd things people say to me, this, that, and, now and again the other thing. And, while doing research, I (inevitably) fall down a rabbit hole (for, at least, a short time) and the starting point of the day turns into three new interesting ideas for future pieces. Somehow, I make a living off of it. Not a bad way to work. I've written for publications including The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Smithsonian, National Geographic Traveler, Every Day with Rachael Ray, and BonAppetit.com. Other recent project include book chapters for National Geographic Books and Fodor's. I'm also a contributing editor for Entrepreneur.
