There are starting points both large and small for my articles and essays: my adopted home state of Alaska, travel, food, science, odd things people say to me, this, that, and, now and again the other thing. And, while doing research, I (inevitably) fall down a rabbit hole (for, at least, a short time) and the starting point of the day turns into three new interesting ideas for future pieces. Somehow, I make a living off of it. Not a bad way to work. I've written for publications including The New York Times
, Rolling Stone
, National Geographic Traveler
, Every Day with Rachael Ray
, and BonAppetit.com
. Other recent project include book chapters for National Geographic Books and Fodor's. I'm also a contributing editor for Entrepreneur
